Aldersgate Outdoors – A Weekend to Remember!

By Brooke Wilson, Director of Communications

In October, the leaves change, the weather gets cooler, football season gets into full swing, and kids come to Camp Aldersgate! During the fall, we have several opportunities for individuals with special needs to experience the magic of camp either virtually or in-person. Recently, we held a weekend camp from October 22nd-24th. Each weekend camp takes on its own theme, and this weekend was no different. True to the heart of camp, this weekend’s theme was called “Aldersgate Outdoors.”

Campers and counselors arrived onsite Friday evening where there were welcome activities, cabin competitions and more! Everyone was so excited to be on camp and enjoy the outdoors together.

Saturday was a full day! After breakfast, each cabin chose their choice activity for the morning. There were several options, but this weekend’s cabins chose to make friendship bracelets, do some coloring, and even play sports. Choosing these activities as a cabin not only promotes independence, but also builds camaraderie. Before lunch time, we also of course went fishing, one of Camp’s favorite past times. Lucky for us, the fish were biting!

The rest of the day included pumpkin painting, pumpkin chunkin’, and pumpkin rolling. Everyone was truly in the fall spirit! Pumpkin painting is pretty self-explanatory, but what is pumpkin chunkin’ and pumpkin rolling? Well, both are big hits! In pumpkin chunkin’, campers take pumpkins and using a giant sling shot, chunk them as far as they can in hopes of hitting a target! A few got pretty close, too! Pumpkin rolling is equally as fun. In this activity, campers pushed their pumpkins down a hill to try to reach the finish line. To say the least, we had a lot of fun painting, throwing, and rolling pumpkins!

Later that evening, campers showed off their skills in a traditional Aldersgate talent show. This group definitely had a knack for singing and dancing! The night was topped off with gourmet DIY popcorn and s’mores to accompany a movie showing under the stars. We had such a great time with all our campers and counselors this weekend! We cannot wait to do it again!

Don’t miss out on all the fun as we host two more residential weekend camps this year!

November 5th-7th – Down the Rabbit Hole

Join us as we celebrate our imaginations and create a topsy-turvy world filled with giant flowers, life-size games, and outrageous homemade hats. We’ll wrap up the weekend with a Mad Hatter Tea Party and celebrate our “un-birthdays!”

December 10th-12th – Holidays

Grab your favorite holiday attire (e.g., Halloween costume, patriotic shirt, reindeer antlers, St. Patty’s day hat, etc.) and head to Camp for an epic celebration that you won’t want to miss!

For campers who prefer a virtual camping experience, we have one of those weekend camps coming up as well!

December 3rd-5th – Palettes and Performances

Let the good times roll and the creativity flow with art, crafts, music, and so much more!
