Camp Aldersgate to Host Inaugural Adult Weekend Getaway in Northwest Arkansas
Campers will attend at no cost thanks to the support of The Methodist Foundation for Arkansas.
LITTLE ROCK, ARK: For the first time ever, Camp Aldersgate will be hitting the road to offer an adult retreat from November 3-5, at Mount Sequoyah, located in Fayetteville. The Methodist Foundation for Arkansas is funding the opportunity for adults with special needs, ages 19-55, to attend for free.
In 2022, Aldersgate announced the opening of an office in Rogers with the intent to reach more families across the state. Director of Programs, Luke Nipper, said this retreat will be a great way to accomplish this goal.
“We are excited to offer this weekend getaway for adults with special needs in a beautiful setting in Northwest Arkansas. Not only are we able to serve more of the state, but by expanding the age range, we are able to tap into an additional population of individuals who need our programs,” said Nipper.
Nipper also said that there have been requests from this age group and their parents/caregivers for additional opportunities like this one. The goal is to meet this need and provide a space for social and recreational activities independently, while creating new friendships and connections, he said.
“Many times, adults with special needs can feel left out of social experiences. Having a chance to gather with peers and experience community is what it’s all about,” said Nipper.
Even though it will be off-site, many of the same traditional activities will be offered such as s’mores around the campfire, crafts and friendly cabin competition games. The curriculum will be developed by full-time Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialists on Aldersgate’s staff.
The retreat is designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Individuals who are interested in registering can sign up online. Spots are limited and will be granted on a first come, first served basis. The deadline to apply is October 20th.
